Released in 2016 by the Chinese technology company ByteDance, TikTok rapidly gained international appeal with its user-generated engaging content, such as dance challenges, lip-sync videos, comedy skits, and educational clips. The platform feeds its users with highly personalized content through a powerful algorithm in its “For You” feed, making discovery very engaging.

What happened?
In a notable reversal of fortune, TikTok, the app for short videos that has achieved phenomenal fame, found itself banished across the length and breadth of America by the Supreme Court on January 18, 2025. The high court upheld a legislation that mandated the Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest itself of its U.S. interests. Citing security concerns over data privacy and foreign influence, this law required ByteDance to sell TikTok to a U.S. business by January 19, 2025, failing which TikTok would be expected to cease its operations in the country.
The unanimous ruling of the Supreme Court specified that the law contravened no First Amendment rights and that there were ample considerations of national security weighing in on the data collection methods employed by TikTok and the links of its foreign adversary.
In preparation for an impending ban, TikTok notified users that the app would no longer be available for download within the country starting January 18, 2025. Anyone attempting to use TikTok following this date would find messages denying the app’s availability, bringing an abrupt end to an estimated 170 million U.S. users’ ability to utilize the app.
But, to everyone’s surprise, newly elected President Donald Trump made moves against the ban, promising an executive order favoring TikTok supporting the delay of the ban for an additional 90 days to negotiate a deal for U.S. ownership and turn TikTok from a Chinese company into a U.S.-joint venture with American stakeholders. This assurance led to the restoration of services for American users by TikTok, given that any further development of the agenda depends on amicability between regulatory authorities and political arrangements.
Fears of national security, data privacy, and foreign influence led to the ban of TikTok. U.S. lawmakers and intelligence agencies have for a long time raised alarm bells about TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, alleging that it has links to China and poses risks that user data might be collected by the Chinese government.
Why did President Trump change his mind?
Donald Trump’s shift in stance on TikTok’s ban appears to be driven by political and financial motivations rather than national security concerns. He was adamantly calling it an espionage tool of China but has allowed for a 75-day extension permitting ByteDance to negotiate a sale or restructure of its U.S. operations.
